Nat GEO actually has two magazines aimed at kids – Nat Geo Kids and Nat Geo Little Kids. Both National Geographic kid magazines have printed and digital versions.
What’s great is that if you claim 3 months of free digital access, you’ll be able to access over 40 issues!
If your kid loves animals, don’t skip Ranger Rick’s magazine subscriptions.
The Ranger Rick brand has several kid-focused magazines, including the original Ranger Rick, followed by Ranger Rick Jr., Ranger Rick Cub, Ranger Rick Zoobooks, Ranger Rick Zoodinos, Ranger Rick Zootles, and Ranger Rick Zoobies.
The digital copies of these magazines are FREE, but the printed versions require a paid subscription.
You don’t need to visit The Smithsonian museums face-to-face to learn awesome things about the world around.
Smithsonian Kids gives kids from anywhere in the world FREE access to photos from the National Zoo, information animals and insects, etc.

Online Kid Magazines with Free Access
The following magazines currently do not offer Free Kid Magazines by mail, but follow them anyway.
Their websites are useful enough with plenty of good resources that kids will be just as satisfied.
- Sports Illustrated Kids – This digital tween magazine is for big kids who are into sports.
- Young Rider – From need-to-know facts about horse care and training to fun stories about real youth and riding adventures.
Young Rider is full of entertaining and educational articles for youth who love horses. Print and digital versions are available.
- Humpty Dumpty – There aren’t many free toddler magazines around, but this award-winning magazine is aimed at children ages 2 to 6.
It’s an activity book with stories, mixed with kid-friendly ads, educational spots, and other reading material that promotes their creative growth. Sometimes, the publisher offers a trial subscription on social media.
Make your kids join the cover contest – this could also lead to free printed magazines for your kids.
- Jack & Jill – This is from the same publisher as Humpty Dumpty, except this magazine is geared towards kids ages 6 to 12.

- Highlights Magazine – This kid-friendly magazine is perfect for little dreamers. It offers a monthly dose of positive encouragement, giving kids inspiration and challenges with every story and “highlights.” Print and digital copies are available.

Subscribe to the Thomas & Friends site so you could get in on any upcoming promotions (the issues are sold on Amazon so freebies are rare).
- Fun for Kidz – Inspiring both boys and girls with stories written specifically for 6- to 12-year-olds. There are features about science, arts & crafts, puzzles, comics, and interesting stories.
Aside from the main Fun for Kidz magazine, there are also sub-magazines like “Boys Quest,” which is specific for boys interested in cartooning.
- Whizz Pop Bang – This British science print magazine for children has been inspiring and teaching kids since 2015.
Get to enjoy plenty of science news, puzzles, experiments, and other information that will inspire any budding scientist age 6 to 12 years old.
- Stone Soup – Stone Soup has been around since 1973. It is one of the best literary magazines focused completely on kids age 13 and under.
Stone Soup is 100% authored and illustrated by kids, so if you have a budding writer or artist, this magazine can inspire them with their art. This mag is available in print and digital copies.
- Brainspace Magazine is a phenomenal science-based magazine for kids, tweens, teens age 8 to 14 years old. It tackles thought-provoking topics from Earth sciences to biology, technology to space, math, and more.
There are no free kid magazines by mail right now, but Brainspace has a perpetual 15% off sale.
- Girls’ World: If your tween girl (ages 6 to 12) is obsessed with celebrity lifestyle, fashion, crafts, and other Hollywood content, Girls’ World magazine can be their go-to mag.
- Make Magazine: This magazine is geared toward older kids (9 to 18 years old) who are interested in engineering, tech, and sciences.
Inside Make Magazine, you’ll read experiments, tested projects, in-depth reviews and interviews, inspirational stories, and plenty of skill-building tutorials that they can replicate at home. Available in both print and digital copies.
If you have kids between ages 10 and 14, who are interested in journalism, let them check out Scholastic Kids Press.
This online magazine is an awesome resource for politics and current events, written in an age-appropriate way by kids (for kid readers).
Companies usually send e-mails about these promotions or announce them on social media.
It’s good to be updated once they offer free trials or subscriptions, so make sure to subscribe to their newsletter, or follow them on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social platforms.
Other Ways to Get Free Kid Magazines (Not Delivered by Mail)
If you’re willing to go out of the house, you can bring your kid to the following places for a free kid-friendly magazine:
- library: Visit the local library for the best chance of receiving free kid magazines. What’s great about checking out the library is that the issues are usually up-to-date.
- community centers: Most centers have a space for kids. If you’re lucky to have one with a small library, you can check if they’re offering free magazines.
- magazine swaps: It has the similar concept as book swaps. Look out at Facebook if your area already has a magazine or book swap group. If not, you can always start one and encourage people near you to share magazines and books.
Couldn’t Get Free Kid Magazines by Mail?
My own kids love receiving free kid magazines by mail – it makes them feel a bit grown up.
Unfortunately, these printed kid-friendly magazines are rarely given completely free.
